A sad fact of modern life is that there are probably spiders in your home right now. All of them are gross, most of them are harmless, but some could potentially harm you or your family. Luckily for you (and for any little bugs the spiders might try to eat), most venomous spiders have distinctive markings.
Black Widow Spiders:
In fact, you are probably already familiar with the markings of a black widow – a red, orange or even yellow hourglass shape on the underside of the spider’s black or brown midsection. Females are larger than males, and juvenile males and females look about the same. A black widow will typically be around half and inch long, although they can be up to one and half inches with their legs spread out.
Brown Recluse Spiders:
The other spider you want to be on the lookout for, the brown recluse, is trickier to recognize. If the spider you’re looking at has dark, violin-shaped marks all over their heads and backs, you’ve got a brown recluse on your hands! The brown recluse spider is between ¼ of an inch to ½ an inch in length, and has legs that are light brown in color.
In Your Home
Spiders, especially black widows and brown recluses make their homes in dark warm places. Good places to check for spider activity in your home would be places like wood stacks, basements, garages, closets, and any cluttered space.
